    The International and Intergovernmental Programme, Cospas - Sarsat, was established in 1988 by France, Canada, former USSR (now Russian Federation) and the USA with the aim to develop and operate/maintain the Satellite-based System for distress alerts distribution to the SAR Services worldwide, accurately and in a timely manner.

    The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) of the United Nations, are the Depositaries of the Programme.
    Under this framework, more than 70 states are associated to the Programme, among them the Republic of Cyprus, since the 6th of October, 2006.

    In the manual below, you can find information regarding the Programme and the Cospas - Sarsat Distress Beacons, their operation and use, as well as the registration procedures, according to beacon type.
